Beta-alanine May Cause Oxidative Stress

A study was held on high beta-alanine levels which showed the result that beta-alanine anxiety is able to increase free radicals in the body and can also decrease the oxygen intake. It can also become a cause of mitochondrial death. The concentrated cell energy can also lead to serious oxidative stress consequently leading to heart failure. A persistent and careless usage of beta alanine supplements can reduce the antioxidants which can have serious outcomes.

Parasthesia

Beta-alanine has not been reported for having any serious  beta alanine side effects. The most frequently reported one however is paraesthesia which causes a tingling on the skin, predominantly the face, neck, and back of the hands. It isn’t known to be dangerous. This occurrence is generally only seen in doses of 800 mg or higher.

The effect increases as the beta alanine dosage increases and the tingling typically starts about an hour after taking the supplement. It is a potentially uncomfortable but eventually harmless tingling of the skin that commonly affects the face but has also been reported in the abdomen, chest, and extremities.

Decline in taurine level

Beta-alanine is also associated with a decline in taurine levels. Animal studies have shown that taurine levels can drop by 50% as a result of beta-alanine supplementation. Taurine and beta-alanine are acidic with an amine in the beta position. In that respect, they share a similar structure with the neurotransmitter GABA. Taurine and beta-alanine share the same transporter so competition may occur. In experimental conditions, beta-alanine can induce a transient taurine deficiency. An increase in the use of beta alanine supplements can reduce your taurine level to an extent that you may experience side-effects such as an increase in muscle cramps. Prolonged cellular exposure to beta-alanine appears to reliably induce taurine deficiency.
